According to Wikipedia gender equality is defined as the equal treatment of men and women! As a matter of fact aren’t we supposed to treat each other like we would like to be treated? Isn’t that the unwritten rule of civility in the world? Well it turns out that when it comes to equal pay this basic tenet is thrown out the window!
The White House claims “Equal pay is a family issue” and despite the passage of the Equal pay act of 1963 the gender gap persists. The Obama administration has made significant strides to achieve this and I quote: “In April of 2014, President Obama signed an Executive Order to prevent workplace discrimination and empower workers to take control over negotiations regarding their pay. In addition, he signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the Secretary of Labor to require federal contractors to submit data on employee compensation by race and gender, helping employers take proactive efforts to ensure fair pay for their employees.”
I looked at the data from the World Bank and save a few countries nearly half of the labor force in the world is comprised of women. Now that is a significant percentage of the workforce. I wanted to see if there were additional articles that shed light on the subject that paying women equal to men would actually benefit society and lo and behold McKinsey and Company just published a report that shows advancing women’s equality would add 12 trillion to global growth. http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/growth/how_advancing_womens_equality_can_add_12_trillion_to_global_growth
I hope the matter is settled once and for all because it has been shown by many studies that a woman takes home her pay and invests in her family thus investing in the future of her world – which in turn affects ours.
I would like to end with a quote by Queen Rania of Jordan, “If you educate a woman, you educate a family, if you educate a girl, you educate the future.”
